ABOUT
"River City Drumbeat" is a compelling story of music, love, and legacy set in Louisville, Kentucky. Edward "Nardie" White, co-founder of the River City Drum Corp, devoted his life to mentoring African-American youth through the art and cultural traditions of their African ancestors. For nearly three decades, he led the after-school community drum corps, reaching and inspiring youth in his West Louisville neighborhood.
Now in his sixties, Mr. White is preparing to step down and pass the torch to his successor, Albert Shumake, whose life was transformed by the drumline. As he takes up the mantle, Albert guides the next generation of student drummers, including high school seniors Imani and Jailen, and pre-teen Emily, who navigate personal struggles, adolescence, and life changes.
"River City Drumbeat" captures the creative community of mentors, parents, and youth as they make their way in a world where systemic forces challenge their dreams. With evocative visuals, powerful drumline performances, and compelling characters, this film is a testament to the impact of art, love, and community on the lives of three generations.
It's a powerful reminder of how music and culture can foster purposeful resilience and build a legacy that transcends challenges in the American South.
