Screening of SONGCATCHER + Q&A
Speed Art Museum, South 3rd Street, Louisville, KY, USA
Overview
Songcatcher
Directed by Maggie Greenwald
After being denied a promotion at the university where she teaches, Doctor Lily Penleric (Janet McTeer), a brilliant musicologist, impulsively visits her sister, who runs a struggling rural school in Appalachia. There she stumbles upon the discovery of her lifeโa treasure trove of ancient Scots-Irish ballads, songs that have been handed down from generation to generation, preserved intact by the seclusion of the mountains. With the goal of securing her promotion, Lily ventures into the most isolated areas of the mountains to collect the songs and finds herself increasingly enchanted. 2000, U.S., DCP, 109 minutes. PG-13.
Includes a post-screening discussion by musician and scholar John Harrod as part of the Science on Screen grant initiative.
An initiative of the COOLIDGE CORNER THEATRE, with major support from the ALFRED P. SLOAN FOUNDATION.
