ABOUT
"The Playmaker" explores the life and legacy of North Carolina playwright Paul Green, best known for "The Lost Colony." Born in Harnett County, Green's childhood experiences with racial discrimination deeply influenced his prolific writings on segregation and violence. This documentary, featuring interviews with Greenโs family and experts, reveals his controversial folk plays addressing integration and social reform.
The film pairs an original Southern Gothic musical score with never-before-published archival materials, going beyond Green's iconic works to reveal the man behind them. It challenges viewers to reflect on contemporary issues like unjust incarceration and the Black Lives Matter movement while celebrating Greenโs storytelling prowess as a beacon of hope. By examining his legacy, "The Playmaker" urges audiences to engage in the ongoing fight for justiceโa journey as relevant today as it was a century ago.
